Social Networking Security

Today, more and more people are using social media platforms to create, share, and exchange information and idea through the network.   And most of them did not realize, they are also exposing their personal information to the public, like your home address, phone number and degree of prosperity. Therefore social networking security should be a good lecture for the people who have rich social relation online.

For example, www.renren.com is some kind of Chinese face book for the most of the Chinese college students. When I was in college, it is the best social network for the college student, but now after it become branding. It is on the wrong business way.
I just saw one break new in couple days ago. The renren was exposing the student’s Tencent QQ number to some criminal agencies. (QQ is an online chatting platform). And the criminal agencies are trying to use the contracts from the QQ to reach the owner’s parents’ QQ number, and doing some kind of financial swindles. This is the reason why the most of Chinese people always got some unknown phone numbers calling and message about financial swindles. Comparing to before, we have already sharing too much personal information to public, but most of the people have no chooses. The reason is if you want to use their service, you must need to share some kind of your personal information to their agencies for getting their service. For example, we need to use our actual email to get the agencies’ confirm link.
Technology is growing so fast, so the lawmaker is also making different laws to restrict these technologies to violate personal privacy, but the question is, is it really can limit the technology to stop violating personal privacy?  If I am the client's technical advisor, I suggest two main points. One is to help the customers to protect their personal information security, and the other one is to prevent the wrong business way from their services.  I hope every business client services can loyally service for their customers, not only care their profit and branding.

  1. Interesting post! I do believe to some extend social media is getting out of control and violating people privacy. Companies are willing to request as much personal data from us as we are willing to provide. The more companies know about us the better they can predict customer behavior thus increase revenues. They can use this information for their own direct benefit as a company as well as sell it to other companies or just store it for future needs. Some of these practices can be consider not as harmful and in many cases just beneficial for society as companies can provide better services by knowing more about us. However, the main purpose of business is to create revenue and if we do not have regulations to protect privacy they can easily violate privacy rights.
